Sweet and savoury: what to order together at Ivano's in Dumfries

At Ivano's Italiano, the Italian takeaway at 11 Whitesands in Dumfries, a good takeaway order usually has three parts: a main, something to share, and something sweet. Try a Diavola pizza with garlic mayonnaise, a creamy Boscaiola pasta with garlic focaccia, or a Pollo Cacciatora with boiled rice, then finish with sweet panzanelle and a Nutella dip. Every dish below is on our current menu.

These are suggestions from our own menu, not rules. If you already know what you like, the full menu is the quickest way in.

Pairings that work

Something hot, something cool: Diavola pizza and garlic mayonnaise

Our Diavola pizza is pepperoni, red onion, chilli flakes and jalapeños on tomato and mozzarella, on our Romana-style thin crust. A pot of Garlic Mayonnaise on the side is the classic way to cool it down between slices, and it works for the crusts too. Our guide to the spicy dishes has more hot ones.

Something creamy, something to mop it up: Boscaiola and focaccia

Our creamy pasta dishes, such as the Boscaiola (cream, pancetta, mushrooms and ham) or the Carbonara (cream, pancetta and ham), leave sauce behind. A Focaccia, our garlic bread, made from the pizza dough with garlic, olive oil, oregano and sea salt, is the way to finish it. Tomato and mozzarella, two ways: Arrabbiata and a Caprese salad

A Penne Arrabbiata, our spicy tomato sauce with garlic, chilli and Italian herbs, sits well next to a Caprese Salad: sliced beef tomatoes layered with buffalo mozzarella, olive oil, oregano and basil. One is hot and the other is fresh and cool.

Chicken with rice

Our chicken dishes are chicken fillets, sliced or in pieces, finished in a sauce, and a portion of Boiled Rice from the sides soaks it up well. Folded and dipped: the calzone with an arrabbiata dip

Our Calzone is a folded pizza with mozzarella, ham and mushrooms. Order an Arrabbiata Dip with it, our tomato, garlic and chilli sauce, to dip the edges in. Our guide to dips and sides has all ten dips.

The chip shop way

Sweet and savoury in one bite

Some dishes put sweet and savoury together on their own:

• Pizza Al Scozzese: pepperoni, haggis and a drizzle of infused honey on tomato and mozzarella. Scozzese is Italian for Scottish; our haggis article has more.
• Miami: ham and pineapple, the pizza people argue about.
• Sweet Chilli and Garlic dip: sweet, garlicky and a little hot, with chips or panzanelle.
• BBQ Chicken pizza: sliced chicken with our own BBQ sauce, cooked in a pan with garlic, chilli and pomodoro, with smoky BBQ sauce added.

Most of our desserts are bought in ready-made, and we say so on our allergens page, because the maker's box is where their allergen information comes from. The sweet panzanelle come out of our own fryers, and the tiramisu is homemade.

Something to drink

As well as cans of Coca-Cola, Irn Bru and the rest, we have three Italian sparkling drinks from San Pellegrino: Limonata (lemon), Aranciata (orange) and Aranciata Rossa (blood orange). A lemon one with a seafood pasta, or an Irn Bru with a fish supper: your choice. The full list is with the drinks.

One example order for a night in

For two people: one 12-inch pizza, one pasta dish, a focaccia to share, and sweet panzanelle with a Nutella dip to finish. It covers pizza, pasta, bread and dessert in one basket.

Two more things to know. Our fryers use beef dripping, so the panzanelle, chips and everything else from the fryers aren't suitable for vegetarians or vegans. And tagliatelle is usually made with egg, so it adds a "may contain egg" to any pasta dish.

Ordering

Once we reopen, Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 10pm, put the whole order in one basket at ivanos.uk, for collection from 11 Whitesands, Dumfries DG1 2RR, or delivery across most of the town.
