Beyond pizza and pasta: chicken dishes and risotto at Ivano's in Dumfries

Ivano's Italiano, the Italian takeaway at 11 Whitesands in Dumfries, makes ten chicken (pollo) dishes and eight rice dishes alongside its pizza and pasta. The chicken dishes use real chicken fillets, sliced or in pieces, cooked in tomato, creamy or curry sauces, and the risottos share our pasta sauces. This guide explains what's in each one, and which are worth knowing about if you avoid gluten.

In this article9 sections

Most people come to us for pizza or pasta, so these two sections of the menu get overlooked. They're a good choice if you'd like something without pasta or bread.

At a glance

  • Real chicken fillets

Sliced or cut into pieces, depending on the dish

  • Ten pollo dishes

In tomato sauce, creamy, or curried

  • Eight rice dishes

Seven risottos and a chilli con carne with boiled rice

  • Avoiding gluten?

Most of these have no gluten marked in our allergen table

Real chicken fillets

Our chicken dishes are made with real chicken fillets, sliced or cut into pieces depending on the dish, and finished in the sauce. Sliced chicken fillets also go on our chicken pizzas and into the chicken pasta dishes.

In tomato sauce

  • Pollo Cacciatora: chicken in our arrabbiata (spicy tomato) sauce with black olives, fresh basil and chilli flakes. Alla cacciatora means "hunter's style" in Italian; you may know it as chicken cacciatore.
  • Pollo Funghi Piccante: chicken and mushrooms in arrabbiata.
  • Pollo Verdure: chicken in Italian tomato sauce with mushrooms, sweetcorn, onions and peppers, and a hint of chilli.
  • Pollo Salsa Rosa: chicken in arrabbiata, finished with fresh double cream.

Creamy

  • Pollo Funghetto, also called Pollo Supremo: chicken and mushrooms in a cream sauce with a touch of white wine.
  • Pollo Al Creama: chicken in a rich cream sauce with a touch of white wine.
  • Pollo Parmigiano: chicken in a creamy white wine sauce, finished with a generous amount of grated parmesan.
  • Pollo Diavola: chicken, pepperoni and jalapeños in a rich, creamy formaggio (cheese) sauce.

Pollo Parmigiano isn't chicken parmigiana

The name catches people out. It isn't the breaded "chicken parmigiana" you'll find on pub menus, where a coated chicken breast is topped with tomato sauce and melted cheese. Ours is sliced chicken in a creamy white wine sauce, finished with parmesan.

Curries

  • Chicken Curry: chicken in our homemade curry sauce.
  • Creamy Coconut Chicken Curry: chicken in a rich, creamy coconut curry sauce.

Risotto

If you know our pasta, most of the names will look familiar, because our risottos share their flavours with the pasta sauces:

  • Funghi Risotto: creamy mushroom rice.
  • Campagnola Risotto: creamy rice with chicken and mushrooms.
  • Speciale Creama Risotto: creamy rice with ribbons of ham, chicken and mushrooms, finished with a touch of white wine.
  • Pancetta Risotto: rice in a creamy base with bacon and ribbons of ham.
  • Cardinale Risotto: rice with a creamy Bolognese, topped with cheese.
  • Speciale Verdure Risotto: rice in Italian tomato sauce with mushrooms, onions, sweetcorn and peppers, topped with cheese.
  • Marinara Seafood Risotto: seafood rice with mussels and prawns.

The same section has our Chilli Con Carne, served with boiled rice. It's homemade, with kidney beans, garlic and chilli, seasoned with cumin and cooked in our pomodoro (tomato) sauce. It's the same chilli that goes on the Pizza Alla Chilli Con Carne.

If you avoid gluten

This is where these two sections are useful. Here's what our allergen table shows:

Our kitchen handles wheat flour every night. We take care, but we can't promise any dish is free from gluten. If you're coeliac, please read our article on gluten and allergies and talk to us before you order.

What you have with it counts. Boiled rice has no gluten marked; chips may contain it, and panzanelle are made from wheat dough.

  • The dishes made with white wine contain sulphites.
  • The Marinara risotto contains crustaceans (prawns) and molluscs (mussels), and may contain fish.

Everything is listed dish by dish on our allergens page. Please tell us about any allergy before you order.

Ordering

The pollo dishes and risottos are on the menu, next to our pasta. Wondering how hot a dish is? Our guide to the spicy dishes sorts the menu from mild to hot, and our guide to the Italian words on our menu explains names such as cacciatora and salsa rosa. Once we reopen, Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 10pm, order at ivanos.uk for collection from 11 Whitesands or delivery across most of Dumfries.
