Feeding more for less: getting good value from a family takeaway in Dumfries

At Ivano's Italiano, the Italian takeaway at 11 Whitesands in Dumfries, the simplest way to feed a family for less is to order two 12-inch pizzas instead of three 10-inch ones, add a big box of panzanelle and a large bottle of fizzy juice, and collect it yourself. Using the prices on our menu today, that pizza night for four comes to £24.80. Below are the small choices that add up, with real prices, and three example orders.

1. The 12-inch pizza is the better buy

A 12-inch pizza has about 44% more pizza than a 10-inch one (it's the area that counts, not the width). On our menu, the 12-inch costs between 50p and £1.50 more:

So for a family, two 12-inch pizzas give you nearly as much pizza as three 10-inch ones, for less. Two 12-inch Margheritas are £16.00; three 10-inch Margheritas are £21.00.

2. Check the named pizzas before adding toppings

Extra toppings are priced one by one (most vegetables are £1.00 each), so a named pizza can work out cheaper than building the same thing yourself:

• A 12-inch Al Funghi is £8.50. A 12-inch Margherita with mushrooms added would be £9.00.
• A 12-inch Vegetariana (mushrooms, roasted peppers, sweetcorn and onions) is £9.00, just £1.00 more than a Margherita. Adding those four toppings yourself would cost £4.00.

3. Penne or spaghetti, not tagliatelle, if you're counting

Most of our pasta dishes come with a choice of penne, spaghetti or tagliatelle. Penne and spaghetti are the same price; tagliatelle is 80p more. Our lowest-priced pasta dish is the Macaroni Cheese, made with our homemade cheese sauce, at £5.50.

4. Eighteen panzanelle for £1 more than twelve

Panzanelle, our little fried dough balls, are £2.50 for 12 or £3.50 for 18: six more for £1. They're one of the cheapest things on the menu to put in the middle of the table and share.

6. At the chip shop counter, make it a supper

On a fryer item, adding chips as a supper costs a little less than ordering chips on their own: £3.80 for large chips instead of £4.00, and £2.60 for small instead of £2.80. A fish supper with large chips is £7.20 for the fish plus £3.80, so £11.00. A sausage supper with small chips is £6.10.

7. Collect it yourself

Delivery adds a charge, shown at the checkout before you pay. Collecting from 11 Whitesands doesn't. For children

We don't have a separate children's menu, but the menu has plenty of familiar, lower-priced choices: the Macaroni Cheese (£5.50), a single sausage or hamburger from the fryer (£3.50 each), chicken nuggets (£4.50 for eight), or a 10-inch Margherita (£7.00). Leftovers are part of the value

Leftover pizza and pasta can go in the fridge for the next day. Food Standards Scotland's advice is to cool leftovers as quickly as possible (ideally within one to two hours), keep them in the fridge for no more than two days (rice for no more than 24 hours), reheat them until they're steaming hot all the way through, and reheat them only once. Our fryers use beef dripping, so nothing from the fryers is suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

Once we reopen, Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 10pm, put the whole order in one basket at ivanos.uk, for collection from 11 Whitesands, Dumfries DG1 2RR, or delivery across most of the town.
