Ivano's Italiano, the Italian takeaway at 11 Whitesands in Dumfries, cooks prawns, mussels, tuna and anchovies in its pasta, risotto and pizzas, as well as fish suppers from the fryer. The best known is the tagliatelle Marinara, prawns and mussels in a tomato sauce with a hint of chilli, which customers have named in their reviews over the years. Here's what's on offer, and what anyone with a fish or shellfish allergy needs to know first.

First, a word about "marinara"
The word means different things in different places. In Italy, a pizza marinara has no seafood at all, and in America, marinara sauce is plain tomato. In Britain it usually means seafood, and on our menu it does. Our guide to the Italian words on our menu has more like it.
Seafood pasta
Four pasta dishes are built around seafood, all starting from our arrabbiata, a tomato sauce with garlic and chilli:
Marinara
Prawns and mussels in Italian tomato sauce, with a hint of chilli
Gamberetti Chilli
Prawns in a rich tomato sauce with a hint of chilli. Gamberetti means small prawns
Imperiale Gamberetti
Prawns in tomato sauce with a hint of chilli, finished with a touch of cream
Al Tonno
Tuna in a rich tomato sauce with garlic and chilli
Choose penne or spaghetti, or tagliatelle for a small extra charge.
All four can also be made with our gluten-free penne, which is cooked in its own pan, in fresh water, with its own utensils. Our kitchen handles wheat every night, though, so those dishes still carry a "may contain gluten" mark: if you're coeliac, please read our article on gluten and allergies and talk to us first.
Seafood risotto
Our Marinara Seafood Risotto is seafood rice with mussels and prawns. It sits with our other risottos on the menu, and you can add more seafood, or chilli, when you order.
Pizza with fish
- Al Tonno & Cipolla: tuna and onion on tomato and mozzarella.
- Pizza Di Napoli: anchovies and capers on tomato and mozzarella. Salty and sharp.
You can also add tuna, anchovies, mussels or prawns to any of our pizzas when you order.
Build your own
Every pasta dish on our menu takes seafood add-ons: tuna, anchovies, mussels and prawns. Prawns in Al Creama, our cream and white wine sauce, or mussels and prawns in arrabbiata, are both good places to start. Our guide to creating your own pizza or pasta has the full list.
Fish from the fryer
And then there's the fish supper: fish in batter, with chips. In 2014 our website said Ivano made his crispy batter with two different types of flour. Our fryers use beef dripping, so nothing from them is suitable for vegetarians. The rest of the chip shop menu is in our article on fish suppers.
If you have a fish or shellfish allergy
Please read this before you order. Our allergen table separates the three groups the law lists:
- Crustaceans: prawns.
- Molluscs: mussels.
- Fish: tuna, anchovies and the battered fish.
Here's how our seafood dishes are marked:
| Dish | Contains | May contain |
|---|---|---|
| Marinara (pasta) | crustaceans, gluten, molluscs | egg, fish |
| Gamberetti Chilli | crustaceans, gluten | egg, fish |
| Imperiale Gamberetti | crustaceans, gluten, milk | egg, fish |
| Al Tonno (pasta) | fish, gluten | egg |
| Marinara Seafood Risotto | crustaceans, molluscs | fish, milk |
| Al Tonno & Cipolla pizza | fish, gluten, milk | soya |
| Pizza Di Napoli | fish, gluten, milk | soya |
| Fish (fryer) | fish, gluten | crustaceans, egg, milk, molluscs, sulphites |
Fish marks on things that aren't seafood
- Everything fried may contain fish, chips included, because the fryers are shared with battered fish.
- The Spicy Marie Rose and Sweet Chilli and Garlic dips are marked may contain fish.
Prawns and mussels are cooked in the same small kitchen as everything else, and we can't promise any dish is free from them.
The full table is on our allergens page, and our guide to reading the allergen table explains the marks. Please tell us about any allergy before you order: add it in the notes box at checkout, add it in the notes box at checkout, ring the shop, or tell us at the counter.
Order
Once we reopen, Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 10pm, you can order any of these at ivanos.uk for collection from 11 Whitesands, Dumfries DG1 2RR, or for delivery across most of the town.
Seafood questions
Do you do seafood pasta in Dumfries?
Yes. Our Marinara has prawns and mussels in tomato sauce with a hint of chilli, and there's also the Gamberetti Chilli and Imperiale Gamberetti (prawns) and the Al Tonno (tuna).
Is your marinara seafood?
Yes. On our menu, Marinara always means seafood: prawns and mussels in arrabbiata. In Italy a pizza marinara has no seafood at all, which is why the word confuses people.
Do you have a seafood risotto?
Yes, the Marinara Seafood Risotto, with mussels and prawns. You can add more seafood, or chilli, when you order.
I have a shellfish allergy. What should I know?
Prawns are crustaceans and mussels are molluscs, and both are cooked in the same small kitchen as everything else. Several non-seafood items, including the chips, may contain fish. Please check our allergens page and tell us before you order: in the notes box at checkout, by phone, or at the counter.
Have an allergy? Please read our allergen information and tell us before you order.
