Part-time jobs at a Dumfries takeaway: what the work at Ivano's involves

Ivano's Italiano, the Italian takeaway at 11 Whitesands in Dumfries, takes on part-time staff for Thursday to Sunday evenings: pizza and pasta chefs, a fryer cook, kitchen assistants, front of house staff and delivery drivers. You need to be 16 or over, 18 or over to work the fryers, and 21 or over to drive for us. When we're hiring, every open job is listed on our careers page with its pay and how to apply.

The six jobs

These are the jobs a night at Ivano's needs. How many of each we're looking for changes, so the careers page always has the current list.

  • Pizza chef

Making our thin, Romana-style pizzas in our electric pizza oven: the dough, the toppings and a clean station. Pizza experience is preferred.

  • Pasta chef

Cooking our fresh pasta dishes and sauces, lasagne and risotto, with prep before and during service. Kitchen experience is preferred.

  • Fryer cook

Our chip shop range: fish, chips, haggis and sides, cooked in beef dripping. 18 or over, because the job uses hot oil.

  • Kitchen assistant or porter

Washing up, prep, cleaning, taking out the waste and helping the chefs. No experience needed: we'll train you.

  • Front of house

Serving at the counter, taking phone orders and packing orders. No experience needed: we'll train you.

  • Delivery driver

Taking orders to customers around Dumfries in your own car, with mileage paid on top of your hourly pay.

Delivery drivers need a full UK driving licence, their own car and insurance that covers food delivery (business use), and must be 21 or over, for the insurance.

Hours that fit around other things

We're open Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 10pm, and every job is part-time, on some of those evenings. Some roles start a little earlier for prep. Because the work is in the evenings and at weekends, it can fit around school, college or another job. When you apply, tell us which evenings you can do.

Age rules

There are only a few, and each one is there for a reason:

  • 16 or over for every job. We don't take on anyone under 16.
  • If you're 16 or 17, your shift finishes by 10pm.
  • Under-18s don't use the fryers or the dough mixer. That's why the fryer cook job is 18 or over.
  • Delivery drivers are 21 or over, because of the insurance.

Apart from those, there's no age requirement, and we welcome applications from everyone.

How pay works

Pay follows the UK National Minimum Wage, which has different rates for people aged 21 and over, 18 to 20, and under 18. The government changes the rates on 1 April every year, so we don't print figures here: the careers page shows the current rate for each job, and gov.uk lists the national rates.

  • Chefs can earn more with experience.
  • Delivery drivers are paid by the hour, with mileage on top for using their own car.
  • Everyone is paid through payroll (PAYE), with holiday pay and a workplace pension where eligible.
