Italian takeaways and restaurants in Dumfries: a local guide

Dumfries has a handful of Italian restaurants and takeaways, most of them in or near the town centre, close to the River Nith. The sit-down restaurants we know of are Bruno's on Balmoral Road, which says it opened in 1967, La Dolce Vita on the Whitesands, Little Italian, and Pizzeria Il Fiume at Dock Park; the Italian takeaways include Benvenuto on Eastfield Road and, once it reopens, Ivano's Italiano at 11 Whitesands. This guide sets out where each one is and what each says about itself, with no rankings.

Why this guide reads the way it does

We're Ivano's Italiano, one of the businesses listed, so we've kept it strictly factual. Each description comes from the business's own website or listing as of 3 October 2026, each section is in alphabetical order, and there are no ratings or opinions. Details change, so check with each place before you go. If you run one of these businesses and something here is wrong or missing, please get in touch and we'll correct it.

Italian restaurants (sit-in)

Bruno's Italian Restaurant, Balmoral Road

Bruno's says it opened in 1967 as "the first Italian restaurant in South West Scotland", and describes itself as "the oldest family run Italian restaurant in the town". Its founder, Bruno Toni, "came from a small village in the Garfagnana region of Tuscany", and the restaurant says it is now in its fourth generation. Bookings are by telephone, and it also does takeaways.

La Dolce Vita, Whitesands

La Dolce Vita describes its food as "a modern take on authentic Italian cuisine, in the heart of Dumfries". After almost ten years on Irish Street it has moved to 68 Whitesands, upstairs above The Bank Bar & Tapas. Its kitchen runs on a log-fired oven, used for the pizzas and for other dishes too. Its website says it offers pizza dough and pasta for people who avoid gluten (ask for details), and it has a separate vegan menu. Tables can be booked online, or by phone for larger parties.

Little Italian Dumfries

Little Italian calls itself a ristorante pizzeria, "where authentic Italian flavours meet warm hospitality", serving "stone-baked pizzas and rich pasta dishes" and a selection of meat dishes. Bookings are made through its website, which also sells gift vouchers.

Pizzeria Il Fiume, Dock Park

Il fiume is Italian for "the river", and the restaurant sits at Dock Park beside the Nith. It describes itself as an "Authentic Italian/Mediterranean Family run restaurant, established over 40 years ago", with an "original log oven, specialising in pizzas, pastas, char-grilled steaks and seafood". Reservations are by telephone.

Italian takeaways

Benvenuto Takeaway, Eastfield Road

Benvenuto is a takeaway on Eastfield Road with its own online ordering site, for delivery and collection. On its Facebook page it describes itself as an "Authentic Italian Takeaway", and its website lists pizza, pasta and seafood among its cuisines.

Ivano's Italiano, Whitesands

That's us: a family-run Italian takeaway at 11 Whitesands, closed since 2024 and reopening soon. The menu is Romana-style thin-crust pizza made to Ivano's own recipe, a long list of pasta dishes, chicken and risotto dishes, and a full chip shop menu. Once we reopen, orders are taken at ivanos.uk for delivery or collection, Thursday to Sunday, 4pm to 10pm. Allergen information for our dishes is published on our allergens page.

Pizza takeaways

These sell pizza but don't describe themselves as Italian. All take orders online.

Italian cafés, coffee and ice cream

Cafe Piccolo, at 21 Whitesands, describes itself as a "small family run cafe specialising in Italian coffees, home made ice cream and home baking". Across the river, the Palmerston Café at 68 Glasgow Street has been run by the Tamburrini family since 1969, when, as its website puts it, Mr and Mrs Peter Tamburrini "came to Dumfries and took over the ownership". Today it serves fish and chips, "artisan Italian ice cream, Italian pizzas and Lavazza fresh coffee". Italian cafés and ice cream have a long history in Scotland: our article on the Italian community in Dumfries and south-west Scotland tells that story.

Where they are

Most of the town's Italian food is within a short walk of the river:

  • Dock Park, a little downstream: Pizzeria Il Fiume.
  • The town centre: Geezabit on Friars Vennel and Marios on St Andrew Street.
  • Elsewhere in town: Bruno's on Balmoral Road and Benvenuto on Eastfield Road; across the river, the Palmerston Café on Glasgow Street and Pizza Max on Lincluden Road.

Questions people ask

What Italian restaurants are there in Dumfries?

As of October 2026 we know of four sit-down Italian restaurants: Bruno's (Balmoral Road), La Dolce Vita (Whitesands), Little Italian, and Pizzeria Il Fiume (Dock Park). Benvenuto (Eastfield Road) is an Italian takeaway, and Ivano's Italiano (11 Whitesands) is an Italian takeaway that is reopening soon.

Which is the oldest Italian restaurant in Dumfries?

Bruno's says it opened in 1967 and describes itself as the oldest family-run Italian restaurant in the town.

Where can I get Italian food in Dumfries if I avoid gluten?

La Dolce Vita's website says it offers pizza dough and pasta for people who avoid gluten, and to ask for details. At Ivano's we have gluten-free penne, cooked in its own pan, in fresh water, with its own utensils, but our kitchen handles wheat flour every night, so we can't promise a gluten-free environment: please read our gluten and allergies article first. Whoever you order from, tell them about any allergy before you order.

Is this guide a ranking?

No. Each section is in alphabetical order, each description is the business's own wording or a plain fact, and there are no ratings. If something is wrong or missing, please get in touch through our contact page.
